Do I need to come with a dance parter?

Not at all! You do not need to bring a partner to join our classes or events. We welcome solo dancers, and we regularly rotate partners so everyone has a chance to connect, learn, and dance with different people. If you do come with a partner and prefer to stay together, that’s completely fine too. Our goal is to create an inclusive, welcoming space where everyone can feel comfortable dancing.

Which class should I join?

Level A is for new-comers to Lindy Hop, while Level B is for students who have been with us or more experienced swing dancers. The prerequisites for Level B is knowing a tuck-turn and a swing-out. Feel free to come talk to anyone at the welcome table or your instructor if you have questions about which level to join!

Do you have classes literally every Monday?

Unfortunately, there are some Mondays that we skip– but they are rare! Most months we meet four times a month. Keep your eyes peeled for updates in our social media or email newsletter.

I do swing dance at xyz venue, can I join Level B since I already know some swing?

“Swing dance” is a wide and expansive genre of dance; single-time swing or East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing (WCS), Balboa, jive, boogie woogie, shag, country swing, Charleston all are in the swing family with Lindy Hop. Come talk to us about your dance experience and dance with us so we know where you best fit!

If I pay for Level B, can I come to Level A to further hone my skills for free?

Yes!

When is Fancy Dance every month?

Typically it is the fourth Monday of the month, but for months with five Mondays, it could be slightly different. Keep your eyes peeled on our calendar for those five-Monday exceptions!

When is the weekly practica?

7:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. and we skip the practica on fancy dance nights.

How much are classes?

We have a suggested donation of $50 for a month of classes. We also believe in No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds (NOTAFLOF) or Pay What You Can (PWYC). Some of our students pay more than $50 to support students who cannot pay at this time. Ultimately, we don’t care how much you pay us, we are just excited that you are excited to learn Lindy Hop with us!

If I’m a monthly student, do I need to pay cover for Fancy Dance?

No! It is included in your tuition.

If everything is donation based, how are the donations spent?

All funds go towards paying rent for our venue, guest DJs, admin costs (insurance, website, etc.), guest workshop teachers, and swag purchases. Your trusty, regular South Sound Stomp weekly teachers are all donating their time to our community. This helps keep our tuition low and accessible.

I have fun snacks or treats to share with everyone. Should I bring them to Fancy Dance?

Yes! We have a “Snack Soiree”  (or potluck table) at every Fancy Dance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acknowledgements

We at South Sound Stomp recognize that Lindy Hop is the original swing dance, created by black American dancers in 1930’s Harlem. These dancers were influenced by blues, African movement, and a deep history of systemic oppression. Alongside jazz music, Lindy Hop was created as an avenue for community and self expression. We are honored to be guests and teach this dance as a way of supporting movement, culture, and community. If you would like to learn more, we highly recommend “Frankie Manning, the Ambassador of Lindy Hop”, which you can borrow from us, or purchase at your local bookstore. We also recognize the Squaxin and Nisqually Tribes who have called Olympia home since time immemorial.

Our Shared Values

RESPECT
Treat every person with kindness, courtesy, and care.

INCLUSIVITY
Everyone is welcome here — all races, all genders, all bodies, all abilities, all ages, all backgrounds. Be open to dancing with individuals of all genders and skill levels.

CONSENT AND BOUNDARIES
Always ask before engaging in close or unexpected movements. A “no” or feedback is honored with gratitude and respect. Respect personal boundaries—verbal consent should guide physical interactions.

Policies

RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE
Management reserves the right to deny service to anyone violating the Code of Conduct.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY
Discrimination or harassment based on gender identity, sexual orientation, body size, race, ethnicity, disability, age, or any other protected characteristic will not be tolerated. South Sound Stomp has a Two-Strike Policy, however an immediate ban can be employed to preserve the safety and integrity of the space.

How We Move Together

DANCE WITH OPENNESS
Invite, welcome, and uplift dancers of all skill levels and styles.

COMMUNICATE CLEARLY
You can always say no — to a dance, to a move, to anything. Boundaries make our community stronger.

KEEP EACH OTHER SAFE
Move with care, be aware of the space around you, and look out for one another. Foster a positive and encouraging environment. Avoid disruptive, unsafe, or inappropriate behavior on and off the dance floor. Address conflicts respectfully or report them to designated staff if necessary.

DANCE FIRST, CONNECT RESPECTFULLY
Our dance floor is about shared joy, not dating. Please honor connections for the sake of dancing, not romantic pursuit.

If Something Comes Up

If you experience or witness something that doesn’t align with these values, please reach out to an organizer or staff member. We are here to listen and to help.

Thank You!!

Thank you for being part of a community where everyone can dance, grow, and belong. We’re so happy to share this space with you!
